Aguesseau, Henri-François d'
- Aguesseau, Henri-François d'
(1668-1751)
magistrate
Born in Limoges, Henri-François d'Aguesseau was appointed advocate general of the parlement of paris in 1691 and in 1700 was named procurator general. Becoming chancellor in 1717, he was exiled to Fresnes from 1718 to 1720 for having opposed the economic system of john law, and again from 1722 to 1737 for his hostility to the influential Cardinal Guillaume dubois. By his important ordinances regarding donations (1731), testaments (1736), and substitutions (1747), Aguesseau contributed greatly to the codifying and unifying of the parlement's legislation.
